Parenting a child to love reading, requires that parents themselves find cure for fear of reading books.  Parents should lead by example. It is not telling children to stop staying glued to television that will arouse children interest in reading, but by showing them how to read. Show them example by reducing your attachment to television, have time to read too.

Raising a leader is a goal that all parents should strive to achieve. This is because language development in children assures development of good, solid skills and habits that last a lifetime. By encouraging our children in the early years to read, we lay the vital foundation for raising a reader.

Parenting: When a child questions the reason behind a rule

The most important thing for parents is that they themselves should understand the importance of reading at home. Parents who do not understand or are not aware of the importance, would not be able to inculcate the reading habit in their children. Though parents are very busy with their day to day work, it is still not an excuse for neglecting children or not stressing on the importance of reading books.

Surprisingly, reading religious books also help in inculcating good values in children. These books help us in knowing about the almighty and how he wants us to live our lives. Reading the Bible does not just help you to become a better person in life, but also show you the right path likewise other religious book. Technology has seemingly made the moans of amassing knowledge easier, now you can sit at your home and find out about everything happening in the world.

The truth is that if a child is not taught how to read books early, and he is bought all the technology gadgets, he will still not read. That is why you see a lot of young people on Facebook scrolling on pictures, making comments, watching video and making others rich without thinking of researching what will improve their lives. On WhatsApp, they are always busy with forwarding messages that do not add values to their lives.

They don’t seek knowledge but live on other people’s knowledge which is good on its own but when someone lives on people’s knowledge and refuse to add value to it, it will soon become valueless. It won’t grow. He will be like a man with one talent in the Bible. The man refused to trade with it and it was taken from him and given to the one who added value to his own.

In this world of competitiveness, it’s always advantageous to encourage our children to amass knowledge and there is no better way to do so, than reading. A reader is a leader. There is nothing new or strange in this world. Everything has been written in books. Search for them and read. The man who doesn’t read has no advantage over the man who can’t read.

Kofi Annan, a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006, once said, “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

Teach your children how to read and lead by example.
